COLORADO 2019
Our first stop was a local RV park. We stayed here to finish up our business in Valdosta and to check out the new RV for any problems. It is a good thing we stayed close because we had a leak under the shower, which the folks at RV Horizon fixed right away.
We headed west with a stop over in Alabama to see the grandkids and our daughter and son-in-law. I did some work to get us ready for travel like breaking in the generator and going over accessories we needed.
Our third stop was in Louisiana with friends Allison and Brent Loewer near Gardner, LA. We got there late and had a great visit before turning in. A special thanks for letting us crash in the front hard!
Our fourth stop was near Wichita Falls, TX in a small state park called Copper Breaks. It was a long day of travel and the temps were 103-107 degrees all day. We had water and electricity, so the AC worked great to keep us cool.
We were in a good spot to reach cooler weather now and made it when we arrived at Heron Lake State Park about 9 hours later. The park was on a lake and very well maintained. We slept good with NO AC!
We finally arrived in Colorado and got a tip from a local at the ranger's station about this a nice campground that he liked on Lake Vallecito. They have several there and we chose the North Canyon Camp Area because it had bigger spots and a lake view. At $10/ night it was OK, but we still wanted a free site. We read about a forest road site that just happened to be a few hundred yards down the road from where we were. After looking at the site, we decided it would be perfest for us to stay the next few days. A few pictures here, but more to come.

big bend national park, texas feb 2019
This was our first real test overlanding and depending on our vehicle. We drove all the way to Del Rio, Texas for our first night of camping at Lake Amistad Recreation Area. The blue water of Lake Amistad was beautiful but the night winds were so strong we had to remove our rainfly. Early the next morning we drove to Big Bend National Park to reserve Backcountry campsites for the week. Because this was the busy season for Big Bend, our reservations gave us an extra night before we could stay there. We were blessed to find a perfect spot at Big Bend Ranch State Park. Our iconic pictures from BBRST include the El Solitario flatirons, Closed Canyon (which we hiked)
and the Hoodoos trial. Our exploration of Big Bend National Park began at the Lost Mine Trail where the rim view of the Chisos Basin was breathtaking. Our week flew by as we explored the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive highlights, the Chimney's Trail, and the famous Rio Grande Hot Springs. Our favorite hike was the Boquillas Canyon Trail where the Rio Grande flows between the canyon walls of the Sierra Del Carmen Mountains, one side the US, the other side Mexico. We are so thankful to live and travel in this beautiful country. Can't wait to full-time in your Neck of the Woods. Come on! Let's EXPLORE NOW!
